Socitm Insight's Better connected report (the  eleventh annual survey of local authority websites) sets out to provide an informed view of the quality of the experience that members of the public are likely to have when engaging with local government through a website. We do this by examining how well each site deals with common queries and situations. The results are based on what we actually found during November and December 2008, not on aspirations or good intentions.

Executive summary

The report calls on councils to adopt a new strategic approach to 'self-service' in response to the economic crisis - and sets out blueprint for future website management. and says that the current crisis should be a call to action for those not yet committed to self-service, a low-cost means to meet growing demand for council information and services at a time resources are unlikely to increase.

The structure of this report follows the criteria for high-quality local authority websites that develop the ideas that websites should be 'useful, usable and used'.
