Use of social media has exploded, appearing on the radar of ICT managers, but mostly for the wrong reasons. The term 'social' implies 'not related to work', but this is a fallacy. We explain why organisations must embrace social media.
Executive summary
As well as exploring why public service organisations should embrace social media, the 44pp report provides:
- a guide to current activity in social media, informed by a survey of public and voluntary sector managers
- examples of how councils and individuals are using social media for a range of service delivery and engagement activity, identifying eight types of social media with potential business benefits and a range of applications in use
- advice to CIOs and ICT managers on what they need to do in order to support and exploit social media facilities for business advantage, including a checklist of essential actions to ensure their organisation considers and decides upon appropriate action in this area
Contents of the report
- Section 1 Now hear this! - Use of social media has exploded, appearing on the radar of ICT managers, but mostly for the wrong reasons. The term 'social' implies 'not related to work', but this is a fallacy. We explain why organisations must embrace social media.
- Section 2 What is everyone twittering about? - We report on current activity in social media, informed by a survey of public and voluntary sector managers, and extensive research into how people are using the available facilities.
- Section 3 ICT management and social media - Our surveys have found that most ICT managers take a cautious view of social media, restricting or even blocking access. Having explained why this position is untenable in the medium term, we suggest what CIOs and ICT managers need to do in order to support and exploit social media facilities for business advantage.
- Section 4 Conclusions. - We provide a summary of our findings, and a checklist of essential actions for the CIO, or head of ICT, to ensure that their organisation considers and decides upon the necessary action.
- Appendix 1 - Other results from the survey.
- Appendix 2 - Questions in the survey.
