Boot camp for IT leaders...

Socitm President Jos Creese opened Socitm 2010 (Brighton 10-12 October) by telling delegates to regard the next few days as a 'boot camp for IT leaders, a call to arms for what lies ahead'.

Delegates might react to the prospect of massive cuts in two ways, he said. They could be very frightened, or they could take the view that this has never been a better time for IT. Interestingly, his comments were strongly endorsed in the opening remarks from keynote speaker Lord Blair of Boughton, formerly commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

The first day of the conference has heard from John Barradell, Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove Council; Jane Frost, Director of the Individuals Customer Directorate at HMRC; and Rob Whiteman, Managing Director of Local Government Improvement. A large number of other sessions have taken place on topics including open and linked data; customer access, the G-cloud, and Big Society.

Reports and video material from the event is being published at www.socitm2010.net and the conference is attracting a lively following from Twitter via the hashtag #socitm2010.
