Nick Roberts, IT Group Manager for Surrey County Council, has been confirmed as the new Socitm President at Socitm’s Spring Conference, which took place in London on April 10.

Nick, who takes over the Presidency from Steve Halliday, CIO at Solihull MBC, has a long history with Socitm. He was previously chair of the Socitm South, Socitm's largest region, and chair of the National Advisory Council (now named Membership Advisory Council). He has also served as Vice Chair of the Socitm Insight Steering Group (now Socitm Research Steering Group.

Results from the latest Better connected survey of council website performance suggest that council websites need to move faster to accommodate the rapid growth in the use of mobiles to access online services. Socitm’s Website performance service shows that these grew during 2013 to average 31%.

Comprehensive testing highlights the challenges of developing council websites for access from mobile devices.

Testing the experience of using council websites from mobile devices has become an integral part of the Better connected survey and the impact on overall results can be seen for the first time in the 2014 report.

The change has been introduced at a time when, according to data from Socitm’s Website performance service, 31% of visits to council websites in 2013 were made on mobile devices (tablets as well as smartphones).

The Better connected assessment of council websites is built around the concept of ‘top tasks’, an approach to website design and navigation that enables quick and simple customer journeys for website users from search engine or home page through to resolution.
