IT Trends

IT Trends is Socitm's annual survey, published in January, of Heads of ICT and other senior managers in local authorities other local public services who control or influence ICT spending.

The survey report is based on responses to a lengthy questionnaire sent to heads of ICT in the 433 local authorities of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Surveys are also sent to selected police forces, fire services and other public bodies. Benchmark data provided by Socitm members is also used. Around 200 authorities contribute to the report each year.

We are just starting to collect the IT trends data for the 2010/11 survey

In the immediate aftermath of the Coalition Government's £6bn cuts package, including the freeze on all new IT expenditure over £1m, and the prospect of severe austerity ahead for IT managers, these are challenging times for public sector IT. However, as Socitm President Jos Creese has said elsewhere, the current crisis may represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for CIOs and heads of IT to lead our organisations to build a more mature approach to IT investment.

Please do your bit to ensure we get as many returns as possible this year, so that our report is an accurate record of what is happening in the sector.

The Excel survey form is short and easy to complete. Organisations that have submitted data in recent years have been sent a copy of the survey form with the last recorded data loaded into the form. If you do not have a copy, please download the relevant template (Excel format):

Forms need to be returned to ittrends@socitm.net  by Monday the 9 August. The report IT Trends 2009/10: stretched to breaking point can be ordered from this link.
