CIO or CTO? - time to choose says new Socitm briefing
Manage the technology or drive transformation: now is the time for ICT professionals to choose says latest briefing from Socitm Insight
The CTO/CIO dilemma - should ICT professionals aspire to become the organisation's chief technology officer, or widen their horizons to focus on delivering the transformational capability of ICT - is discussed in Career crossroads - CIO or CTO?: essential reading for all ICT managers.
The briefing is available now, free of charge to Socitm Insight subscribers, at Socitm.net
Many senior public service IT managers regard their job as being primarily about providing 99.95% service availability, and safeguarding diligently the security of the organisation's information.
However, at a time when austerity demands that public sector organisations maximise value from their information assets, exploit the potential of technology to transform service delivery, enable customer and employee self-service, deliver shared services and facilitate access anywhere, anytime with any device, there is a wider role for top ICT professionals beyond technology management.
The briefing acknowledges that the CIO role is not for everyone, and that some senior ICT professionals will wish to remain CTOs. However given the relentless march of cloud computing and the commoditisation of user devices that spell the end of the large internal ICT estate, it is important that they aware of the implications of so doing.
Be sure your pitches to public service organisations are well-informed
Subscribe to Socitm's Applications Register
Time and time again, ICT managers responsible for specifiying and purchasing hardware, software and services tell Socitm how unhelpful it is to get approaches from the private sector that are ill-researched and badly informed.
And this is simply not necessary. Socitm's Applications Register will allow your sales and marketing staff access to the latest information on what local public service organisations are buying and using, how long ago they purchased it, whether they are working in partnership with other organisations and so on.
The Register also carries data about each organisation's ICT function, how it is organised, how much it spends, how many are employed internally and externally.
Finally there is data about how highly organisations rate their suppliers and their offerings, information that may translate directly into business opportunities for you.
