Most local authorities agree that mobile and flexible working will help to improve services and operate more efficiently. However, whilst many authorities are already planning or piloting the use of mobile working to support transformation and efficiency, most are still at the early stages of wider scale adoption and implementation.

Monmouthshire County Council is aiming for a 50% reduction in work stations, with 'drop in' facilities located at strategic points within Monmouthshire. The drivers for this are environmental, employee work/life balance and efficiency. They have an added driver that their current HQ, housing some 950 staff, is due to be decommissioned in February 2012, so will be building a new HQ for 450 workstations. They have embarked upon a structured change programme to aid success.
Case Study: Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council's use of PDA's by housing repair operatives

50 mobile electrical and multiskilled operatives were issued with PDA in 2007. These replace the paper based work sheets for scheduling their work and also generates a real time status report of a job back at the office. Cashable savings of £250,000 in 2007/8 have been generated as a result of this work.
