This annual report analyses the latest strategic trends in the development of ICT as presented by Gartner and relates them to the world of local public services.

Our annual review of technology provides an overview of ICT trends and insight into the dynamics of the ICT industry. Continuing the redesign from last year, we have related nearly all our analysis to the components in the Planning for ICT framework and provided a printed executive summary and a detailed report available on CD-ROM.

Each year Gartner provides its view of the major strategic trends in the ICT industry
worldwide. In this section we examine those statements and supporting material. As
always, it is interesting to relate this information to the much smaller world of local
government (and its partners) in the UK. This section also examines emerging technologies.

In this section we summarise the more in depth coverage of the various strands of our
Planning for ICT framework covered in The technology challenge in 2006 - the detailed
report available on CD-ROM. In addition, we also explain some of the new or evolving
concepts from Gartner, which it believes are key to an efficient and effective organisation.
