The global financial crisis and recent technology developments will have a major impact on the public sector in 2009 and the next few years.

Each year Gartner identifies a number of trends and developments and makes a significant number of predictions about technology and its management. From the research in 2008, the Socitm Insight team have identified a number of key topics. Several of the topics relate to emerging technologies but and as importantly, a number relate to how the current very turbulent IT service environment is to be managed. This key messages report includes the following:

• Section 2 provides a short overview of 2008.

• Section 3 describes Gartner advice on immediate tasks for dealing with the current pressures.
• Section 4 describes some of the more detailed issues in support of the tasks in section 3.
