Austerity tests managers. When, where and how to cut are critical decisions. Benchmarking is an essential service to focus savings to where they will do least harm or even improving services.
Lack of this important knowledge risks 'salami slicing'; only the cuts are so severe that fillet steak might be a better analogy than salami.
In this summary for 2010, we show how participants in our benchmarking groups have succeeded in improving their services despite cuts in resources. Theirs is an impressive achievement.
Our findings relate to the 113 organisations that participated in our benchmarking services in 2010. Whilst this is a statistically significant sample of the UK local public sector, the conclusions do not necessarily relate to any one of the participants, or any other organisation.
